Adventure in Puerto Rico

Nov 27, 2017 6 years ago

I went to the beach in Puerto Rico over the summer, and while we were there, we took an unexpected journey that made me realize that life is not always about the destination, but the journey. While at the beach, a cool breeze was blowing across the golden sand of the shores of Puerto Rico. I floated on top of the clear ocean water when I saw a small crevice in the ocean wall. With my adventurous spirit, my friend and I made the decision to investigate the narrow gap. To get to the opening, we had to travel across jagged rocks on the thin shore lines. As we hiked through the sharp rocks barefoot, there was blood gashing out of our feet as sweat fell across our foreheads. While we were stumbling through the path, we tried to avoid falling thirty feet into the rough water crashing into the walls. We made our way to the cave, and we witnessed tiny crabs crawling near our feet and spiders dangling from their webs within inches of our faces. We were almost to the cave when we were faced with another obstacle. To get to the opening, we had to swim over a large rock that was just below the water and had spiky black sea urchins scattered across the rock. We already made the treacherous journey to get to the crevice, so we had to decide if we were going to risk swimming over the rock and getting stung, or go back to where we had started. After debating for a short period of time, we decided that we were going to make it to the cave no matter the outcome. My friend swam over the rock without a problem, but then it was my turn. I finally got up the courage to take my turn to swim over, and as I was almost past the rock, I started to sink. I felt something sharp scraping against my leg, and when my friend pulled me from off the rock, my entire leg was bleeding and swollen. I had never felt that stinging sensation before. It felt like I was pricked by hundreds of sharp needles dinging into my leg. After hysterically crying, I looked up at the horizon and suddenly had my breathe taken away. The magnificent view of the cave made me forget about the pain in my leg and focus on the once in a lifetime view I had just experienced. The sky radiated the colors red, orange, and yellow, and I felt like I could see hundreds of miles of ocean. All the pain and hardships I faced on my journey to the wondrous cave felt like nothing compared to that moment of awe and inspiration I experienced. Even though the trip to the cave was long and strenuous, the joy that I felt after finally arriving made the whole trip worthwhile. The journey to the cave made me realize that even though events may seem difficult at times, the result can make the trip very rewarding in the end.
