Erin Hamlin is an American professional luger. A four-time Olympian, she is the first U.S. athlete to win an Olympic medal in singles luge. She is the USA flag-bearer at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
She was born on November 16, 1986 in Remsen, New York, as Erin Mulladay Hamlin, daughter of Eileen and Ronald Hamlin. Erin attended Remsen Junior-Senior High School. While in school, she was a sectional All-Star in track and soccer.
At 12 years, Erin took an interest in luge. Consequently, she attended the United States Luge Screening Camp in Syracuse, New York. She won a gold medal at age 17 years at the Junior National Luge Championship that took place in Lake Placid, NY.
By 2004, the talented luger had won a whopping 10 medals in five years of racing. She raced in the Junior World Cups held in Austria and Germany. At the 2004 Junior World Cup, Erin was placed seventh.
In 2006, she represented the USA at the Olympics Championships held in Torino, Italy.
In 2009, Hamlin emerged tops at the FIL World Luge Championships in Lake Placid, New York. It was the first time in a staggering 99 races that a German woman wasn't the top finisher.
She also represented United States in the 2010 Olympic Games held in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
During the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, she won the singles bronze medal. This was the first time an American of either gender to medal in singles luge competition.
She was a silver medalist at the 2017 World Championships, World Champion in sprint discipline, and silver medalist as a lead leg in team relay.
Her other achievements are 23 World Cup medals and 4 World Cup victories.
Mia Hamm is Hamlin's favorite athlete. Her favorite book is Dan Brown's Angels & Demons.
Hamlin is engaged to Jonathan Hodge, her longtime boyfriend from Minnesota. Jonathan, 32 years, is a physical education teacher. The lovebirds are set to walk down the aisle this summer.
