The lockdown has opened my eyes to many things. As a writer, before the enforcement of lockdown nationwide in my country, I had a lot to write about, because I was always going out, seeing new things, witnessing so many interesting things, and enjoying myself. When the lockdown started, it was like a living hell for me, because in normal circumstances, I'm the type of person that will prefer to go a long way to see my friend and talk rather than just sit down at home and talk with my neighbors. Two weeks into the lockdown, I was already feeling homesick, all I did most times was to wake up, take my phone look for writing opportunities online, chat my friends up, sleep, and eat. It got to a time that even writing became a problem for me, I was just seeing the same thing every day, which was beginning to make me sick. One month passed, and there was still total lockdown, I had no choice than to start mingling with my neighbors, starting to know them better. Fortunately for me, one of the children who were my mate was also a writer, and I always enjoyed talking to him, we could rub minds together. Soon enough, I began to see so many things I could write about, but the laziness that I had allowed to enter me hindered me, I kept on postponing my writing plans. This neighbor of mine noticed my not writing, and forcefully asked me to pick a date when we can write together so that I don't get the opportunity to postpone again. So, I picked a date, we met at his house, and then we chose what to write on, I was hoping to be the best writer in my area. I picked my pen to write, and then boom, I went blank, I thought of what to write, but it still was not coming, wow, I was stuck and shocked, because I felt I could just pick up writing just like I dropped it, but wow, it shocked me. My neighbor and I then started to write more frequently, any little happening within the environment, no matter how minute it might be or look we would turn into a writing challenge. We began dusting our pens and books, writing articles, poems, stories; narrative, descriptive, any type, and form of writing. We went online, took courses that could help our writing ability, and help us improve it. Then we began calling our friends that we used to write together, to help them as well so that we won't all forget and relent on our writing skills, we began passing writing competitions to ourselves, at least if we could not reach the qualifying stages for some of those competitions, at least we tried our best and wrote what we felt was our best. Then came my mom's birthday, we all planned to bake a cake, the female among us helped us bake it, then somehow, some of my friends smuggled themselves to my house that day to celebrate my mom's birthday, it was really fun, and as usual, we converted into a very fine and interesting story. After about two months of doing our writing exercise, the lockdown was eased in my country, we were able to move out on weekdays but refrain on weekends. We were really happy at this new development, we started planning big, we were moving from house to house together, writing with our friends, my neighbors' friends became my friends, and my friends too became his friends. At times, we would go to a friend's house on Friday, and come back on Monday. Of course, we were not only writing throughout, especially weekends, we would play games as well, football games on a laptop, combat games as well, we even contributed money to buy good games that we could all play together with, but at the same time, our burning for writing did not die down. Then came the day for the senior sister of my neighbor to tie the knot, and get married. We were very excited because one, she was very understanding, and we always enjoyed her company, we were more like her very own best younger ones. Secondly, we were going to eat a lot, without anybody disturbing us, oh my goodness, and finally, another story to write on. We all loved her, so we helped her with the preparations for the party. We were all sad that she was leaving actually because that meant that we won't be having anybody to disturb again, but we were mostly guys, so just to form the big boy impression, we could not cry, we just kept on doing all we could do to help her smooth transitioning into her husband's house. The wedding day came, she allowed us to seat in front like we were all her ex-boyfriends. I was really happy, and made the best use of that day, because that was my first official outing to a party, in months, it was like I just broke out of prison, it was really fun that day, we all planned that we will write about our experiences before that day was over, but trust me, we all slept like logs of wood, we could not write anything until the next day, and we wrote a lot on the next day. I doubt if I will ever forget that party. My lockdown experience was more of a neighbor helping neighbor experience.
I think that culture is highly important for our identity of who we really are in this entire world. Tradition, on the other side, is a combination of rules, set up by our ancient ancestors, thousands of years ago. From the time we were born, parents tell us that we have to respect our traditions and never show disobedience to the culture which creates our personality. Of course, I undoubtedly agree with all these statements and I am not against them, although sometimes people may cross this very slender frontier of tradition which prevents us from self-destruction. However, does any culture have a function or at least a possibility of self-destruction? Firstly, in the place where I live, children should listen to the elders and people always have to help their relatives, and I never showed anything but respect to these statements, until I realized that it somehow may lead to a fall of a country as a whole. Because sometimes relationship takes the higher position rather than law, in my motherland, our political and traditional notions are distorted. Actually, this distortion called “corruption” in the rest of the world, but in my motherland, it is called “good relationship” between you, your friends and relatives. Unfortunately, this so-called “good relationship” notion enhances its power day by day and does not give any way for a middle class to breathe, for instance. This whole thing means that you will never be able to say any word against the followers of “good relationship” and grow as a person because these followers also put their kind of opinion to the top priority level. The distortion that I am talking about is as same as a falling domino: when someone above you spreads this notion, the others who under their influence will flashily catch it. Basically, that is another way of dying for country. Consequently, this created rotting notion obviously affects labors as a doctors, police officers and teachers as well. As a person who previously had faced with a conservative kind of teacher in a primary school, who was highly affected and that is why never saw any alternatives in any issue or solution except her own, I can easily say that it is just a miracle when students manage to save their own personality and inner point of view. Alas, for the majority of students, who have tremendous desire to make a breakthrough, for instance, the reality of conservative teacher may become a stock in a river, which will block their natural personality in future and, as a falling domino, may cause other different artificial alterations. Moreover, the objectivity is not found as the most convenient way of observing or evaluating neither for this kind of teachers nor for their future narrow-minded followers. Following that, when this “highly educated” crowd look at you, they never recognize you as a person, because there is no other right view of life except their own “general view”. When they look at me, for example, they will never guess that I am a debater or writer, they see just another unit of a gear of a huge machine, which depending on their opinion, should work only by one single elaborated system, the system which never makes any progress. Frankly speaking, there is definitely no other way to change this situation except bringing a freshly new ideology. Unfortunately, to do so, students have to study abroad at first, and just after they had gathered an international experience, it starts to be more realistic to alter this notion. I love my motherland and do not want to see how minority part of people makes negative effects on the place where I was born and grown. So, for me, there is no better way except bringing the knowledge to my motherland from outside and finally make an alteration by persuading the majority that 2+2 does not equal to 5.
Virtual reality is defined by Merriam-Webster as “an artificial environment which is experienced through sensory stimuli (as sights and sounds) provided by a computer and in which one's actions partially determine what happens in the environment”. While it is considered a recent phenomenon, the concept has been around for much longer than most people would think, dating back to the 1950s. “Virtual reality” was applied in different ways: flight simulators for the military, special effects in Hollywood blockbusters, and additional products for video game consoles such as Nintendo's PowerGlove. In the past year, interest in virtual reality has skyrocketed. Initially, the interest was focused around virtual reality headsets, first seen in the Oculus Rift created by 17-year old Palmer Luckey in 2013 and released to consumers in March of 2016 . The Oculus and other headsets following its success immerse users into a completely 3-dimensional world, where they can walk around an area and interact with items. These headsets are primarily used for virtual gaming experiences, allowing users to experience simulations like Euro Truck Simulator 2, or already popular games like Minecraft in a fully immersed environment . Following the success of the Oculus Rift, other major companies such as Sony and HTC were quick to jump on the trend: Sony's PlayStation VR headset and HTC's VIVE were released in October and April of 2016 respectively. However, these systems are relatively expensive, with all three being priced around $600, and are also not at all cheap to make: “not only does the headset contain a full HD screen, it holds a miniaturized CPU, a gyroscope, an accelerometer, a magnetometer and all of the other required hardware.” As said by Palmer Luckey, CEO of Oculus, “we are not making money on Rift hardware.” Despite the results so far however, Steven Schneider of Tech Times clarifies, “it really doesn't make sense for a company to debut its its [sic] first real piece of high-end tech at a loss” as “there are a ton of different possible applications ... but an actual market has yet to form.” It is also important to consider that “the first run of a video game console is usually sold at a loss, which the company then makes up over the hardware's lifetime”. Despite the low net income, the feedback for the headsets has been relatively high, with PC Magazine giving the leaders in headsets, such as the Oculus, VIVE, Samsung Gear, and Playstation VR excellent ratings, citing their only downsides as the need for additional accessories such as the Oculus Touch or a powerful PC. The virtual reality of today, while in its early days, has solidified itself as a new and promising industry. Despite skepticism after the flops of early virtual reality such as Nintendo's Virtual Boy in 1995, the future of virtual reality gaming is strong. While past individual attempts at virtual reality systems have failed, this “industry-wide effort” will further improve headsets, adding more features, improving accessibility, and broadening the uses. While the headsets focus mainly on gaming, other uses for the headsets are being explored: 3-D movies, surgery simulations for new surgeons, controlling rovers in space, education and many other industries. The prospects of virtual reality are not limited to simply gaming. As a longtime lover of video games, virtual reality is a topic that I am very well versed in. I have followed the progress in this new subgenre of gaming since the introduction of the Oculus, and have been impressed at the speed by which the virtual reality industry has grown. Over the months since these headsets have been released to consumers, it has been surreal to experience the integration of a sci-fi concept into modern society. From experiencing a virtual reality headset myself to the augmented reality phenomena Pokémon Go, the existence of virtual reality is very real, and its future is sure to only grow stronger into a major industry on par with its parent videogame and computer industries, and will play a significant role in our future lives.
