An unfamiliar familiar place

Dec 15, 2017 6 years ago

I wake up disoriented in an unfamiliar bed, in an unfamiliar place. I lay flat, but my body is rocking to the beat of the waves. When I crawl out of the dark, little cupboard like room, I focus on keeping my balance as the floor shifts beneath me. Out on the deck, the sun's warm rays penetrate my skin. Crystal clear, blue ocean surrounds me with neighboring sailboats a float. Mom and Dad are drinking their coffee, and my two goofy brothers are already wrestling in the sea. I approach the edge of the rickety boat and leap into the air with the biggest smile. Splash. Down, down I sink in the warm salt water. Murmurs of bubbles and splashes fill my pressurized ears until I resurface and my senses are renewed. There's nothing quite like diving into the ocean, only moments after waking up. It's only 7 A.M and we're already wearing nothing but our bathing suits. Who needs shoes or pants when you're in paradise? That's what I call the British Virgin Islands anyways. My family has gone sailing here for years, it's almost like a second home now. In a place like this, there is no need for amenities. Cell phones, makeup, and closed toed shoes are out of sight and out of mind. I feel reconnected to this beautiful world around me, embracing the natural way of life. When i see my reflection, I smile. My skin glowing isn't only from the vitamin D i often lack of, but because of my true happiness seeping through to the surface. Every time i look in the mirror, more freckles seem to appear and my sun-kissed face smiles a little more. My salty hair hasn't been washed in days. That's the true sign of peace of mind. Every day is a new adventure in the B.V.I. Sailing across open ocean for hours reliant on my dad's sailing skills. Snorkeling through reefs that looks like it's straight out of a movie. Bright, fluorescent fish and plants cover the area, giving me reminiscent memories of “Finding Nemo.” Shacks of bars, shops, and restaurants lined up across the beaches. Everywhere we go I'm either wearing shorts or a shirt, never both. That's the norm here. No one cares or judges. I feel gracious and eased to be able to experience these beautiful islands. I never want to leave this sacred place of mine.
