Sunday thoughts

Apr 04, 2019 5 years ago

When I was young, Sunday mornings consisted of flowing dresses and animal crackers scattered on the floor of the nursery as the adults went to “ grown up church”. My parents always left me happily in the arms of Ms.penny (a sweet lady who ran the nursery) . Ms.Penny was gentle and kind, we got along very well , I will always vividly remember her voice and the stories she would read me out of the thin shelf of books that scarcely existed by the doorway. When church had ended I would give Ms.Penny a hug and run to the kitchen to scour the box of donuts for the chocolate covered , cream filled long john I would scarf down every Sunday leaving evidence of my find covering my face. More importantly every Sunday I took away something much more than a satisfied sweet tooth, I took away the idea of God. Bright eyed and having a sponge of a brain I happily absorbed every story and any information I could get about this all mighty being. The Bible intrigued me , it is filled with stories of heroism , greed, hope, faith, sacrifice and revenge. As I grew older I was surrounded by people with other beliefs and exposed to the internet where I learned about other religions. I would quietly study these religions wanting to know more about them. I found that there where 1.1 billion people who did not have a religion (atheism/agnostic) this was unbelievable to me , growing up all I had ever known was christianity. The more I studied these religions the more i would stray from the idea of god and everything I had learned from the Bible, I had so many questions but I thought I couldn't ask anyone because I figured they would just tell me the other religions where nonsense. But if so many people believe in christianity and so many people believe in buddhism ect. who can be sure which religion is correct if any at all? As of today I consider myself agnostic (a person who believes that nothing is known or can be known of the existence or nature of God or of anything beyond material phenomena; a person who claims neither faith nor disbelief in God). I still regularly attend church and when things get bad I will pray, my experience with religion so far has been eye opening and has changed my life. I thank my parents for the opportunity to grow up in a church setting as for I think it has made me into a better person. I do not have a connection with god but I love the lessons that are taught in church and the Bible. I hope to continue my journey with religion and the overhanging question of the existence of God.
