Who Am I?
Sep 27, 2019 4 years agoI was on the bus from Career Center, sitting five seats from the very back like always. I sat alone, taking up a whole seat so no one would sit next to me. Headphones in; I tune out the world as kids fill the bus. Sitting in the seat across from mine there was this girl; I've seen her around but we've never talked. Her skin was slightly lighter than mine, her hair was in a long black weave, and her nails were fake acrylic. I felt her studying me; I paused my music and took my earbuds out, assuming she wanted to talk to me about something. She asked me, “What are you?'' Not “who are you?” The answer to the first question is human. I told her All I know is I'm mixed; an oreo I sometimes call myself. Chocolate cookies with vanilla cream. People keep saying You look like you're from Madagascar. You look Mexican. You look Indian. You look Brazilian. And my favorite: you look like your dog. Thanks, I think… I mean, my dog is cute so I guess that's a compliment? My biological mother is caucasian; My biological father was black and maybe something else too. I wanted to ask my birth mother about him, but decided to bite my tongue. Of course there are DNA tests But I believe the government will receive my results And I won't be able to get insurance; At least that's what I've heard. My superstitions prison guard me, Keeping me from finding myself.
