Blossoming Friendship

“How do you eat your pizza?” The question that started it all, to the beginning of what I didn't know what would happen next. I knew my response “with a fork,” and I was hoping she wouldn't think I was crazy. I had braces for over two years, and recently I got them off; but my habits are stuck with me. The girl who asked me that question, I didn't even know her name, and she didn't know mine. We sat across from each other in Mrs. Kirkham's freshman history class during second trimester, going into this class I was dreading, but she has helped me. The more I learn about her, the more we need each other. The small conversations the week before Christmas break of how she eats pizza, her favorite pepperoni with ranch, to her name Tarah. I was still getting to know her, and the conversation that started it all, lead to others. Her favorite color red, favorite candy Hot Tamales, to an invitation to a dance, and her sweet sixteen. I knew deep down I could not go the dance, but that invitation brought something out of me, joy and happiness, maybe to the with the fact that since moving to Pocatello I haven't really been invited to anything, but it also was the day of the wedding January 21st, which is also Tarah's actual birthday. The following week though was her Sweet Sixteen party, now that invitation was dazzling, a box wrapped in gold polka dots tied with a light pink ribbon and a beautiful hand written card in the prettiest cursive reading MaKayla, to me it was pretty enough to take a picture of it. Inside the card was the invitation that read “Congratulations! You have been selected for the 1920's, Walk Through Time with Tarah as we celebrate the gift of ageing! Adaline Through the Ages, for your benefit, we have included an item or two to help build your ensemble.” Inside the box, I found a black feather boa scarf, with a gold sparkly head band along with a gold necklace. At the time in my English and History class we were learning about the 1920's, the roaring twenties full of jazz, dance and flapper girls. Me being me though searched for a gold, but elegant style dress, which I wasn't seeming to find at least not one I liked until I searched on amazon and found an okay dress that didn't look so bad, at least according to my cousin Libby. A lesson I learned from this you should trust your cousins, Libby was right the dress looked adorable especially with the black feather boa, and a head band I had ordered along with the dress, in the shape of feathers with some sparkles. The outfit tied together with Mom's gold heels that I found in a box when moving still with the price tags on them apparently, she doesn't like them so their mine now. When I arrived at the party I didn't know any of the other girls only Tarah, but for some reason I didn't feel left out or out of place like I normally do, because Tarah had saved a spot right next to her for me. Her house was decorated as a 1950's style diner, with the checkered table clothes and Coca-Cola glasses as center pieces. We ate hamburgers with different types of French fries; the ranch and plain seemed to be my favorite, the cheese not so much. After dinner, the games began, filled with some surprises, the first one to be a scavenger hunt using clues pertaining throughout the 1900s to present day. There were 10 of us all together creating 2 teams of 5. The teams had already been arranged by her mom, but Tarah being the birthday girl wanted me on hers, so they switched the teams around, and off to Fred Meyer we were. Now think of this as 10 teenage girls running around the store in search of items, taking pictures and posting it on Instagram. The clues we did not know many of them so this is when google is your friend. Some were underwear, lemon cough drops, a bed spread, jackets and a Hi-de Ho. Our time limit was to be home by 9:00 and we were the winning team. Once the other team got their since we were early, we watched Age of Adaline. I definitely see why Tarah gave me the 1920s, why I get to take after the main character; Adaline is sweet, sensitive and has lived her life in secret. The following weekend ended up being an invitation to the Lulu dance, my second-high school dance to be exact. That Saturday night I went to her house in order for us to get ready. I wore a multi-color dress that has designs of palm trees and sunsets, while she wore a blue dress with white flowers. Tarah did my makeup which is a story on its own, since I don't know how.
