Writing guidelines for First time writers

Many people simply feel that they do or do not have it in them to write. Talent can be built upon and is not pre-defined. A good idea with a little effort and guidance can help. In general, here are some basic rules for writing well: a) Decide upon a topic – what you want to write about as writing is usually about something! b) Being a good reader helps to be a good writer as the skills are inter-transferable c) Use short words, small sentences, and paragraphs d) Establish a clear time and work-space for writing e) Start slow f) Build the story gradually g) Prefer using Active voice in sentences Example: “I am walking to the beach” instead of “I walked to the beach” as the former is more engaging h) Description is important- Think about the reader engaging experience you would like to create and translate that to reflect in the writing. Too much information or too little will be an overkill. i) Write every single day j) Time yourself- Finish the first draft in 3 months k) While work is close to completion, revisit it and work on edits, checks, and story line. Cut any information that is unwanted and or not useful. Do not feel bad or be critical of yourself! l) Enjoy doing what you are doing so that you can continue doing so. m) Find a mentor/ friend who can help with suggestions and edit the work.
