How I Found My Passion

Dec 31, 2017 6 years ago

When I was little, almost all my curiosities were fulfilled by books. I could get lost between pages for hours, and often resorted to tactful measures to gain more reading time. Behind my textbooks at home, during school hours, and even in the nights under the dim light of my bathroom! You could hardly call me a voracious reader – I was in a higher state that I learnt to recognize later on. Well, now that I had knowledge, I looked for ways to apply it, and just like any science-stricken child, I began experimenting, formulating hypotheses, promising myself I'd publish them as theories when I grew up. The most interesting were the mind experiments, and one such specific hypothesis was the brainchild of weeks' worth of experimenting – when I finally found something faster than light! Oh, how elated I was, having disproved Einstein! According to my experiments – I didn't do many calculations back then – that one thing was the rate of the expansion of the universe itself, eternally accelerating! That was the one of the times I truly believed I could change the world. Then came along the internet. Once I'd learnt how it worked, I set about validating my works. Disappointment ensued. Turns out, the question had already been asked and answered, and in front of the vast knowledge of the internet, my other theories seemed insignificant and incorrect. This hurt me badly. I began to doubt myself and my capabilities. The childish scientist part of me was gone, and as the years rolled by, I set about looking for anything that could bring that feeling back – the rush, the adrenaline of it all! No, I was not yearning for motivation, as I learned over time. My parents were enough providers of that, having conquered all odds to decently raise two kids. It was during this period that I realized what was missing; the same thing from my days with books in the bathroom – a drive. When I had felt defeated on my work, when I started to feel that I didn't have any fuel left, when I felt I wanted to give up – in those moments, I'd lost something precious. So I started on an unfrequented path. We often create a comfort zone around us – a little shell in which our whole world revolves, straight from social media to a group of best friends. But, as I found out, to truly learn something valuable, one has to break out of their shell into a welcoming and nurturing global community. I decided that I would keep on learning – keep on adding skills, expand my skill set and then decide where to implement those skills. Even though this decision came a bit late – just about an year ago, I still explored. The prime lesson that I learned was that a unique and distinguished skill set improves our mental capabilities. I realized that the one thing that drove me now was the world itself – a world whose problems I want to solve, using a different perspective, which could only be found by learning. For now, I am completely focused on what I need to do. I need to change the world.
